What a Patch Cable Is

Patch cables stay short, because the pedals they connect sit inches apart. Stage cables use stranded copper conductors (for flexibility) in a somewhat heavier jacket built to withstand players stepping on it, wrapping it, and unwrapping it repeatedly.

What's Inside a Patch Cable

An insulating layer, typically polyethylene or PVC, surrounds it and keeps the conductor from touching the shield. The shield itself is a braided or spiral-wound layer of conductive material, usually copper, that wraps around the insulation and connects to ground at both ends.

This configuration lets the connector exit the pedal jack parallel to the surface of the pedalboard rather than perpendicular to it. The practical effect is significant: right-angle connections sit much closer to the board surface, take up less vertical space, and put less torque-driven stress on the pedal's jack.
On a tightly packed pedalboard with pedals arrayed side by side, a straight connector on a short cable may not even clear the neighboring pedal's housing. Right-angle connectors solve that problem. They also make cable routing cleaner, since the cable emerges horizontally and can run along the board surface to the next pedal rather than looping up and over. Most dedicated pedalboard patch cables come available in right-angle versions, and for tight, professional board layouts, right-angle is usually the correct choice.
What to Look for When Buying
For a first-time pedalboard builder, the factors that matter most are connector quality, cable flexibility, and whether you want fixed-length or custom-length cables. Fixed-length cables from established brands are the simplest starting point: they arrive terminated, tested, and ready to use. The tradeoff is that you're unlikely to find perfect lengths for every pedal pair, so some cables will carry more slack than you'd like.
